Melancholy Thoughts reproved; or, Hope in Affliction

Hymnal: Doctor Watts's Imitation of the Psalms of David #81b (1787) Topics: Direction and hope; Direction and hope First Line: My spirit sinks within me, Lord Lyrics: 1 My spirit sinks within me, Lord, But I will call thy name to mind, And times of past distress record, When I have found my God was kind. 2 Huge troubles with tumultuous noise Swell like a sea, and round me spread; Thy rising waves drown all my joys, And roll tremendous o'er my head. 3 Yet will the Lord command his love, When I address his throne by day, Nor in the night his grace remove; The night shall hear me sing and pray. 4 I'll cast myself before his feet, And say, "my God, my heavenly rock, "Why doth thy love so long forget "The soul that groans beneath thy stroke?" 5 I'll chide my heart that sinks so low, Why should my soul indulge her grief; Hope in the Lord, and praise him too; He is my rest, my sure relief. 6 My God, my most exceeding joy, Thy light and truth shall guide me still, Thy word shall my best thoughts employ, And lead me to thine heavenly hill. Psalm 5

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.11 (1806) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Direction and defence prayed for First Line: Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear Lyrics: Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear My voice ascending high; To thee will I direct my prayer, To thee lift up mine eye; Up to the hills where Christ is gone To plead for all his saints, Presenting at his Father's throne Our songs and our complaints. Thou art a God, before whose sight The wicked shall not stand; Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight, Nor dwell at thy right hand. But to thy house will I resort, To taste thy mercies there; I will frequent thine holy court, And worship in thy fear. O may thy Spirit guide my feet In ways of righteousness! Make every path of duty straight, And plain before my face. My watchful enemies combine To tempt my feet astray; They flatter, with a base design To make my soul their prey. Lord, crush the serpent in the dust, And all his plots destroy; While those that in thy mercy trust, For ever shout for joy. The men that love and fear thy name Shall see their hopes fulfilled; The mighty God will compass them With favor as a shield. Scripture: Psalm 5 Languages: English

With earnest Longings of the Mind

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P42a (1766) Topics: Direction and hope Lyrics: 1 With earnest Longings of the Mind, My GOD to Thee I look; So pants the hunted Hart to find And taste the cooling Brook. 2 When shall I see thy Courts of Grace, And meet my God again? So long an Absence from thy Face My Heart endures with Pain. 3 Temptations vex my weary Soul, And Tears are my Repast; The Foe insults without Controul, "And where's your GOD at last?" 4 'Tis with a mournful Pleasure now I think on ancient Days; Then to thy House did Numbers go, And all our Work was Praise. 5 But why, my Soul, sunk down so far Beneath this heavy Load? Why do my Thoughts indulge Despair, And sin against my GOD? 6 Hope in the Lord, whose mighty Hand Can all thy Woes remove, For I shall yet before him stand, And sing restoring Love. Scripture: Psalm 42:3-5 Languages: English
