Psalm 107 Last Part

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.238 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Intemperance and pardoned First Line: When God, provoked with daring crimes Lyrics: When God, provoked with daring crimes, Scourges the madness of the times, He turns their fields to barren sand, And dries the rivers from the land. His word can raise the springs again, And make the withered mountains green; Send showery blessings from the skies, And harvests in the desert rise. [Where nothing dwelt but beasts of prey, Or men as fierce and wild as they, He bids th' oppressed and poor repair, And builds them towns and cities there. They sow the fields, and trees they plant, Whose yearly fruit supplies their want; Their race grows up from fruitful stocks, Their wealth increases with their flocks. Thus they are blessed; but if they sin, He lets the heathen nations in; A savage crew invades their lands, Their princes die by barb'rous hands. Their captive sons, exposed to scorn, Wander unpitied and forlorn; The country lies unfenced, untilled, And desolation spreads the field. Yet if the humbled nation mourns, Again his dreadful hand he turns; Again he makes their cities thrive, And bids the dying churches live.] The righteous, with a joyful sense, Admire the works of Providence; And tongues of atheists shall no more Blaspheme the God that saints adore. How few with pious care record These wondrous dealings of the Lord! But wise observers still shall find The Lord is holy, just, and kind. Scripture: Psalm 107 Languages: English

Vain man on foolish pleasures bent

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.CVII.III (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Intemperance punished and pardoned Lyrics: 15 Vain man on foolish pleasures bent, Prepares for his own punishment; What pains, what loathsome maladies, From luxury and lust arise! 16 The drunkard feels his vitals waste; Yet drowns his health to please his taste; 'Till all his active pow'rs are lost, And fainting life draws near to dust. 17 The glutton groans, and loathes to eat, His soul abhors delicious meat; Nature with heavy loads opprest Would yield to death to be releas'd. 18 Then how the frighten'd sinners fly To God for help with earnest cry! He hears their groans, prolongs their breath, And saves them from approaching death. 19 No med'cines could effect the cure So quick, so easy, or so sure; The deadly sentence God repeals, He sends his sov'reign word, and heals. 20 O may the sons of men record The wond'rous goodness of the Lord! And let their thankful off'ring prove How they adore their Maker's love. Scripture: Psalm 107:15-20 Languages: English

When Isr'l sinn'd the Lord reprov'd

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #P.LXXVII.III (1816) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: The Punishment of Luxury and Intemperance Lyrics: 13 When Isra'l sinn'd the Lord reprov'd, And fill'd their hearts with dread; Yet he forgave the men he lov'd, And sent them heav’nly bread. 14 He fed them with a lib'ral hand, And made his treasures known; He gave the mid-night clouds command To pour provision down. 15 The manna like a morning show'r Lay thick around their feet The food of heav’n, so light, so pure, As tho' ’twere angels meat. 16 But they in murm'ring language said, "Is manna all our feast? We loathe this light, this airy bread; We must have flesh to taste." 17 "Ye shall have flesh to please your lust," The Lord in wrath repli'd, And sent them quails like sand or dust, Heap'd up on ev'ry side. 18 He gave them all their own desire, And greedy as they fed, His vengeance burnt with secret fire, And smote the rebels dead. 19 When some were slain the rest return'd, And sought the Lord with tears; Under the rod they fear'd and mourn'd, But soon forgot their fears. 20 Oft he chastis'd, and still forgave, 'Till by his gracious hand The nations he resolv'd to save, Possess'd the promis'd land. Great God, thy glories shall employ

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #39 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Intemperance punished Lyrics: Great God! thy glories shall employ My holy fear, my humble joy; My lips in songs of honor bring Their tribute to th' eternal King. [Earth, and the stars, and worlds unknown, Depend precarious on his throne; All nature hangs upon his word, And grace and glory own their Lord.] [His sovereign power what mortal knows? If be command, who dares oppose? With strength he girds himself around, And treads the rebels to the ground.] [Who shall pretend to teach him skill, Or guide the counsels of his will? His wisdom, like a sea divine, Flows deep and high beyond our line.] [His name is holy, and his eye Burns with immortal jealousy He hates the sons of pride, and sheds His fiery vengeance on their heads.] [The beamings of his piercing sight Bring dark hypocrisy to light; Death and destruction naked lie, And hell uncovered to his eye.] [Th' eternal law before him stands; His justice, with impartial hands, Divides to all their due reward, Or by the sceptre or the sword.] [His mercy, like a boundless sea, Washes our load of guilt away; While his own Son came down and died T' engage his justice on our side.] [Each of his words demands my faith; My soul can rest on all he saith; His truth inviolably keeps The largest promise of his lips.] O tell me, with a gentle voice, "Thou art my God," and I'll rejoice! Filled with thy love, I dare proclaim The brightest honors of thy name. Scripture: Psalm 78 Languages: English

Would you behold the works of God

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #69 (1835) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Intemperance and pardoned Lyrics: Would you behold the works of God, His wonders in the world abroad, Go with the mariners, and trace The unknown regions of the seas. They leave their native shores behind, And seize the favor of the wind; Till God command, and tempests rise That heave the ocean to the skies. Now to the heav'ns they mount amain, Now sink to dreadful deeps again; What strange affrights young sailors feel, And like a stagg'ring drunkard reel! When land is far, and death is nigh, Lost to all hope, to God they cry; His mercy hears the loud address, And sends salvation in distress. He bids the winds their wrath assuage, The furious waves forget their rage; 'Tis calm, and sailors smile to see The haven where they wished to be. O may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! Let them their private off'rings bring, And in the church his glory sing. Scripture: Psalm 107 Languages: English

Thy works of glory, mighty Lord

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: The Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts #70 (1835) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Intemperance and pardoned Lyrics: Thy works of glory, mighty Lord, Thy wonders in the deeps, The sons of courage shall record Who trade in floating ships. At thy command the winds arise, And swell the towering waves; The men astonished mount the skies, And sink in gaping graves. [Again they climb the wat'ry hills, And plunge in deeps again; Each like a tott'ring drunkard reels, And finds his courage vain. Frighted to hear the tempest roar, They pant with flutt'ring breath; And hopeless of the distant shore, Expect immediate death.] Then to the Lord they raise their cries; He bears the loud request, And orders silence through the skies, And lays the floods to rest. Sailors rejoice to lose their fears, And see the storm allayed: Now to their eyes the port appears; There let their vows be paid. 'Tis God that brings them safe to land; Let stupid mortals know That waves are under his command, And all the winds that blow. O that the sons of men would praise The goodness of the Lord! And those that see thy wondrous ways, Thy wondrous love record. Scripture: Psalm 107 Languages: English

Let Children hear the mighty Deeds

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P78a (1766) Topics: Intemperance punished Lyrics: 1 Let Children hear the mighty Deeds Which GOD perform'd of old; Which in our younger Years we saw, And which our Fathers told. 2 He bids us make his Glories known; His Works of Pow'r and Grace; And we'll convey his Wonders down Through ev'ry rising Race. 3 Our Lips shall tell them to our Sons, And they again to theirs, That Generations yet unborn May teach them to their Heirs. 4 Thus shall they learn, in GOD alone Their Hope securely stands, That they may ne'er forget his Works, But practise his Commands. O what a stiff rebellious House

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #P78b (1766) Topics: Intemperance punished Lyrics: 1 O what a stiff rebellious House Was Jacob's ancient Race! False to their own most solemn Vows, And to their Maker's Grace. 2 They broke the Cov'nant of his Love, And did his Laws despise; Forgot the Works he wrought, to prove His Pow'r before their Eyes. 3 They saw the Plagues on Egypt light From his revenging Hand; What dreadful Tokens of his Might Spread o'er the stubborn Land. 4 They saw him cleave the mighty Sea, And march'd in Safety through, With watry Walls to guard their Way, 'Till they had 'scaped the Foe. 5 A wond'rous Pillar mark'd the Road, Compos'd of Shade and Light; By day it prov'd a shelt'ring Cloud, A leading Fire by Night. 6 He from the Rock their Thirst supply'd The gushing Waters fell, And ran in Rivers by their Side, A constant Miracle. 7 Yet they provok'd the Lord most High, And dar'd distrust his Hand: "Can he with Bread our Host supply "Amidst this desart Land?" 8 The Lord with Indignation heard, And caus'd his Wrath to flame; His Terrors ever stand prepar'd To vindicate his Name.
