I left the God of truth and light

Author: James Montgomery Hymnal: Sacred Poems and Hymns #171 (1854) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: Backslider returning to God Lyrics: I left the God of truth and light, I left the God who gave me breath, To wander in the wilds of night, And perish in the snares of death. Sweet was His service, and His yoke Was light and easy to be borne; Through all His bands of love I broke, I cast away His gifts with scorn. 174 I danced in folly's giddy maze, And drank the sea, and chased the wind; But falsehood lurk'd in all her ways, Her laughter left remorse behind. I dream'd of bliss in pleasure's bowers, While pillowing roses stayed my head; But serpents hiss'd among the flowers; I woke, and thorns were all my bed. In riches, when I sought for joy, And placed in sordid gain my trust, I found that gold was all alloy, And worldly treasure--fleeting dust. I woo'd ambition, climb'd the pole, And shone among the stars,--but fell, Headlong in all my pride of soul, Like Lucifer, from heaven to hell. Heart-broken, friendless, poor, cast down, Where shall the chief of sinners fly, Almighty Vengeance! from thy frown-- Eternal Justice! from thine eye? Lo, through the gloom of guilty fears, My faith discerns a dawn of grace; The Sun of Righteousness appears In Jesus' reconciling face. My suffering, slain, and risen Lord, In sore distress I turn to Thee, I claim acceptance on Thy word, My God! my God! forsake not me. Prostrate before the mercy seat, I dare not, if I would, despair; None ever perish'd at Thy feet, And I will lie for ever there. Scripture: 2 Samuel 12:13 Languages: English

Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #228 (1828) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Topics: The returning Backslider Lyrics: 1 Stay, thou insulted Spirit, stay, Though I have done thee such despite; Nor cast the sinner quite away, Nor take thine everlasting flight. 2 Though I have steel'd my stubborn heart, And oft shook off my guilty fears; And vex'd and urg'd thee to depart, For many long rebellious years; 3 Though I have most unfaithful been, Of all who e'er thy grace receiv'd; Ten thousand times thy goodness seen; Ten thousand times thy goodness griev'd; 4 Yet O! the chief of sinners spare, In honour of my great High-Priest: Nor in thy righteous anger swear, T'exclude me from thy people's rest. 5 This only wo I deprecate, This only plague I pray remove, Nor leave me in my lost estate, Nor curse me with this want of love. 6 E'en now my weary soul release, Upraise me by thy gracious hand, And guide into thy perfect peace, And bring me to the promis'd land.

How shall a lost sinner in pain

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #412 (1828) Meter: Irregular Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 How shall a lost sinner in pain, Recover his forfeited peace? When brought into bondage again, What hope of a second release? Will mercy itself be so kind To spare such a rebel as me? And O, can I possibly find Such plenteous redemption in thee? 2 O Jesus, of thee I require, If still thou art able to save, The brand to pluck out of the fire, And ransom my soul from the grave; The help of thy spirit restore, And show me the life-giving blood; And pardon a sinner once more, And bring me again unto God. 3 O Jesus, in pity draw near, Come quickly to help a lost soul, To comfort a mourner appear, And make a poor Lazarus whole; The balm of thy mercy apply, Thou seest the sore anguish I fell, Save, Lord, or I perish, I die, O save, or I sink into hell! 4 I sink if thou longer delay Thy pardoning mercy to show: Come quickly, and kindly display The power of thy passion below: By all thou hast done for my sake, One drop of thy blood I implore: Now, now let it touch me, and make The sinner a sinner no more.

Depth of mercy! can there be

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #413 (1828) Meter: Irregular Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 Depth of mercy! can there be Mercy still reserv'd for me? Can my God his wrath forbear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? 2 I have long withstood his grace: Long provok'd him to his face; Would not hearken to his calls; Griev'd him by a thousand falls. 3 Kindled His relentings are, Me he now delights to spare, Cries, "How shall I give thee up?" Lets the lifted thunder drop. 4 There for me the Saviour stands, Shows his wounds and spreads his hands: God is love! I know, I feel! Jesus weeps, but loves me still! 5 Jesus answer from above: Is not all thy nature love? Wilt thou not the wrong forget? Suffer me to kiss thy feet? 6 Now incline me to repent! Let me now my fall lament! Now my foul revolt deplore! Weep, believe, and sin no more. Scripture: Psalm 77:8

How oft, alas! this wretched heart

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #414 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christian experience Backslider returning Lyrics: 1 How oft, alas! this wretched heart Has wander'd from the Lord! How oft my roving thoughts depart, Forgetful of his word! 2 Yet sov'reign mercy calls, "Return:" Dear Lord, and may I come? My vile ingratitude I mourn; Oh, take the wand'rer home. 3 And canst thou, wilt thou yet forgive, And bid my crimes remove? And shall a pardon'd rebel live To speak thy wondrous love? 4 Almighty grace, thy healing power How glorious, how divine! That can to life and bliss restore So vile a heart as mine. 5 Thy pard'ning love, so free, so sweet, Dear Saviour, I adore; Oh, keep me at thy sacred feet, And let me rove no more.
